Puppy mills Radio Canada

Congratulations to Josee Dupuis of Radio Canada's program "Enquette" for this most revealing and in depth investigation into the dirty, hard, and cruel business of puppy mills in Quebec. Josee not only connected the dots from puppy mills, to brokers, to pet shops, but she also exposed the very lucrative underground economy where veterinarians (how pathetic) play ball, and pet shops don't give a damn where the puppies come from, who are sold to the unsuspecting public.

Veronique Langlois of animaquebec is in denial and refuses to call it as it is. By calling puppy mills "des centre d'elevage" in her ignorance, it makes everything acceptable and defends that breeding is not against the law. Breeding may not be against the law but Langlois has to come to terms with cruelty by any other name is still cruelty. Could Pijac that chairs on the board of animaquebec be a great influential partner who at any cost, defends the sale of sentient beings in pet shops?

How could she sit there and be so flippant when she saw this report and still defends breeding.

We must ask the Ministry of Agriculture for the immediate resignation of animaquebec on the grounds of refusal to address the cruelty issue under the name of puppy mills that thrive on every back road in Quebec. Too many innocent and defenseless animals have suffered the pains of the damn, and died under their so-called protection. You need not only look at their battered, decomposing, living bodies, we need only to look into their eyes to see the suffering they've been forced to endure, under the protection of a governing body who refuses to see it as it is.

Gosh forbid that you and I should omit to pay a tax, as the wrath of Revenue Quebec and Revenue Canada will come down and knock us out of commission, while the psychopaths in the puppy mill industry get away with it with impunity, and animaquebec defends their rights that breeding is not against the law. Enquette's Josee Dupuis proved that it should be.

The laws in Quebec must change, where millers will serve jail time, heavy fines, and be forbidden to every own an animal again, not this crap where the man from the MSPCA/IHS seizure is not allowed to have an animal for 3 years. It must be a life long ban. Where does the law get off thinking that a short-term ban will reform an animal torturer?

An open letter from Nicole Joncas of Teja's Animal Refuge regarding puppy mills

Teja's Animal Refuge is suing the Quebec government and Anima-Quebec for not enforcing the provisions of the Animal Health Act.  And we need your help.

Over the past few years, I've received hundreds of emails from people who have reported puppy mills to Anima-Quebec and still nothing has changed. The millers continue to operate with impunity. They build their fortunes through the ruthless exploitation of animals who are condemned to a lifetime of confinement in barren cages, never feeling the grass under their feet or the sun on their faces; physically and psychologically ravaged; stacked
together, sometimes by the hundreds in unventilated, ramshackle warehouses, without heat in the winter or even the comfort of a cool breeze in the summer.

It is estimated that there are thousands of puppy mills in Quebec. Those of
us who have been inside a mill have not come out unscathed. The images of
hundreds of dogs sweltering in the heat, often without so much as a bowl of
water, cowering in the corners of their cages or barking in frenzies of despair, will forever haunt us. Equally terrible has been the realization that faced with the unwavering refusal of governmental bodies to intervene, we were as powerless as the dogs themselves to alleviate their misery.

We have documented countless unspeakable acts of cruelty and provided this information time and again to those in authority, to those who have the power to make a difference but who choose instead to ignore not only the plight of the animals but their own legal responsibilities.  And we've had enough.  It's time to hold those responsible, accountable.

We have excellent legal representation, solid evidence and a good chance of success, as demonstrated by the fact that the Animal Legal Defence Fund inthe United States has generously donated $4,000 to help fund this lawsuit. Litigation is expensive, even with the pro bono services of our legal team, but we are left with no choice.  If the authorities won't act against the millers, then it's time to act against the authorities.  But we need your help.  That's why I'm not asking but am begging for your help to pursue this lawsuit.  It is my deeply-held conviction that this legal challenge could be a turning point for animal rights in Quebec, and could well inspire similar campaigns in other provinces.

Our legal team says we have a good case, and now it's up to us to provide the necessary financial resources to bring this case to court and win a victory for animals in Quebec.  Help us help the animals by raising money, through fundraisers, silent auctions, car washes, forwarding this request, or whatever way you can. Small donations will add up quickly if we all participate, and it's the best chance the animals have ever had.

Teja' Animal Refuge is a registered charity #85496 4202 RC0001.  Donations can be made at Teja's website at:  http://www.tejasanimalrefuge.ca/. Receipts for charitable donations will be issued for donations of  $25 and more. No donation is too small to help with this lawsuit. On the memo line of your cheque, please specify "Re: lawsuit".

Animaquebec is associated with petland

Not surprising, that animaquebec is associated with petland as they have pijac the multi-million dollar petstore industry that sits on their board. When will they understand the connection between petstores and puppymills? I say never, and it isn't from our lack of trying.

I have not often heard animaquebec talk about animals, but have over and over again heard about their fundraisers. If I'm correct, veterinary clinics are encouraged to make donations to animaquebec.

We the pitiful rescues have to compete with animaquebec for public support to care for the animals we've rescued from the buy and trash society. We get NO government subsidies, we get NO salaries, we get NO grants, and we get NO support from animaquebec when we report heinous cruelty. We do it but for our true love of animals and because of the bad rap animals get from the government, being treated like nothing less than products on a shelf. It's not that we haven't petioned our governments to pass powerful laws offering protection to all the defenseless animals who are animaquebec's reason to fundraise.

We, the true rescuers do the heartbreaking jobs, and we do the grunt work alone. We don't get a salary, we never get a day off, needless to talk about a bonus for a job well done. Instead, we have to compete with animaquebec for every penny we get.

Yesterday I drove to the Montreal SPCA where staff and volunteers are doing a wonderful job keeping these hundreds of dogs (products) as comfortable as possible.

I told the staff that I wanted to adopt two small special needs dogs of their choice. Ones that would otherwise be harder to adopt. Jen C. was most helpful, and placed two little products on the front seat of my old pick up truck.

When we got home, I put them on the floor all the while telling my 9 dogs to be very nice to these little ones and that we had a lot of work ahead to win their trust. My dogs did their sniffing thing, and quietly walked away.

I was shocked at the physical condition of these treasures. They were skin and bones, with a look in their eyes of "don't hurt me please". I put sweaters on them to make them feel warm and safe. I offered them food and water, but they preferred love and affection. I wrapped them in warm baby blankets and held them close to my heart for hours. It took a long time but one finally was brave enough to kiss my hand.

While I was at the SPCA, I went through a room where the dogs there could not be put up for adoption, as these were the dogs the scum who inflicted pain and suffering  want back after the trial. All the dogs from these two seizures are sad living proof of terrible cruelty and abuse to sentient beings. What rights do these bottom of the gene pool have to ever get any of them back. This should not even be figuring in the minds of those who make the laws.

Hard, very hard to believe that the government and ministry of injustice still believe that these people have rights!!!!!!!! The government will give them a small slap on the wrist by not letting them OWN (part of the product thing) animals again for a short period of time, and they may ask them to pay a small fine, giving the government another way of making money. What about the victims? How will the government make up to these dogs the years they spent in small cages from birth to death with no hope in sight? What help does the government give them? What does the government give the SPCA and the many volunteers for their time, expenses, and for their broken hearts. Sweet nothing, that's what they give.

Election time is coming and this is our chance to vote in a government that will make and enforce true laws for animal protection, and animal rights.

The (NDP) is the only party where every member voted against Bill S-203 saying that there is a need for stronger animal protection laws. I know where I'll be putting my X.

Harper (Conservative) found it more important to give Exxon a tax break, knowing fully well of their record breaking profit of 40 billion dollars last year. Not for a moment would this party give a damn about animal rights.

The Liberals (Dion) well it's just the same old crap by the good old boys.

The Green Party I'm sorry but I don't know what their position is on animals.

Yours in rescue,

Nicole Joncas,

Teja's Animal Refuge

Dear Mr. Layton,

I've read this message and the 46 pages and hope that you'll be able to meet most if not all of these promises.

I am concerned though that there was no mention at all about animal protection issues. I'm sure you're aware that as the law stands, animals are a possession and have no rights.

We the animal rights and animal protection groups want to know how the NDP plans on changing the existing and most archaic laws regarding animal protection?

Would you be prepared to form a committee whose interest would be for the protection and rights of animals? Would you be prepared in having animal rescue groups sit and chair on this committee? I would be most interested in being a member of this committee having been in rescue for over 22 years.

Would you be prepared to hear what we have to say in effort to ammend and implement stronger laws for the protection of animals. Would you be agreeable to a zero tolerance of the existence of puppy mills, and abolish the sale of animals in pet stores, across Canada, as these pets come from puppy mills?

Canadian citizens interested in Animal rights and animal protection are growing in leaps and bounds. Are you prepared to work with us Mr. Layton.

Please let us know your answer as soon as possible, certainly before election date as your answer could well influence our decision of where we put our X.

I'm speaking for the many, many thousands of people across Canada who care very much about animal protection and animal rights.

I've BCC'd many of my contacts, and you may here from them as well.

Yours in rescue,

Nicole Joncas, Universal Peace Ambassador
